Our October Company of the Month is CV6 Therapeutics, a clinical stage biotechnology company headquartered in Belfast, developing potential first in class therapeutics for cancer and inflammatory disease.
Founded on more than thirty years of scientific research by Dr. Robert D. Ladner, the company’s mission is to improve patient outcomes by enhancing the effectiveness of existing therapies while advancing new approaches to treating disease.
Today the company is continuing Phase 1a clinical development and preparing to transition into Phase 1b clinical trials, representing another important milestone in the journey from scientific discovery to patient care.
FROM DISCOVERY TO CLINICAL DEVELOPMENT
Every important medicine begins with a scientific discovery.
What many people don’t realize is that most scientific discoveries never become medicines. Many remain important advances in knowledge, but only a small number complete the long journey through scientific validation, company formation, investment, regulatory review and clinical trials before reaching the patients they were intended to help.
That process is known as translational medicine.
CV6 Therapeutics represents translational medicine in practice.
The scientific discoveries that underpin the company were developed over more than thirty years by Dr. Robert D. Ladner. As the evidence continued to grow, so did the opportunity to advance that science into human clinical development.
Today, as the company prepares to transition from Phase 1a into Phase 1b clinical trials, that journey continues.
WHAT MAKES CV6 THERAPEUTICS DIFFERENT?
Unlike many biotechnology companies developing therapies for relatively small patient populations, CV6 Therapeutics is focused on improving treatments already used by millions of patients around the world.
Its lead oncology drug candidate, CV6-168, is designed to improve the effectiveness of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), one of the world’s most widely used chemotherapy medicines. CV6-168 targets an enzyme called dUTPase, aiming to increase stress in cancer cells by allowing uracil to accumulate in their DNA. CV6 calls the underlying biology the Genomic Uracil Stress Response (GUSR).
If successful, the programme has the potential to improve therapies relied upon by millions of cancer patients each year.
The company’s preclinical inflammation programme applies the same scientific platform to another major area of unmet medical need. CV6-1271 is being studied alongside methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis. Medicines such as methotrexate are prescribed to millions of patients worldwide, demonstrating the potential scale of impact beyond oncology.
WHY NORTHERN IRELAND?
The decision to establish CV6 Therapeutics in Northern Ireland grew from Dr. Ladner’s long friendship and mutual respect with the late Professor Patrick Johnston.
Both believed that scientific discovery achieves its greatest value when it reaches patients.
That shared vision ultimately led to the creation of CV6 Therapeutics in Northern Ireland.
Today the company is headquartered in Belfast, with laboratories based at Queen’s University Belfast.
Members of the original scientific team relocated from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles to establish the company in Northern Ireland, joining researchers educated at Queen’s University Belfast and elsewhere across Ireland.
Today the company combines international scientific experience with exceptional local talent.
The overwhelming majority of the company’s investment has come from the United States, bringing international capital into Northern Ireland to support scientific research, highly skilled employment and clinical development.
The recent establishment of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency’s Belfast hub further reflects Northern Ireland’s growing importance as a centre for research, innovation and clinical development.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
CV6 Therapeutics is continuing Phase 1a clinical development and preparing to transition into Phase 1b clinical trials. The ongoing Phase 1a trial is evaluating CV6-168 alongside 5-FU in patients with advanced cancer.
Phase 1a studies are primarily designed to evaluate safety and tolerability. Phase 1b continues to evaluate the therapy while expanding clinical understanding and represents another important step in the development of a potential new medicine.
The company also continues advancing its inflammation programme while expanding scientific collaborations and international partnerships.
